While we may think first of the Scottish influence on Cape Breton’s music and community life, it is by no means the only one. Lower River Inhabitants, in Richmond County, is one of the areas of Cape Breton that was settled and built by Irish immigrants and local residents are proud of that heritage. There's certainly a touch of the Irish in this concert. And we've thrown in some local flavour as well, just for good measure. Cassie and Maggie, an award-winning sister duo from Nova Scotia, have enchanted audiences far and wide with lively fiddle, piano and guitar arrangements and stunning sibling vocal harmonies in both English and Gaelic, all complemented by their intricate and percussive step dancing style. Ríoghnach Connolly is a traditional Irish singer and flute player from County Armagh who was recently named Folk Singer of the Y ear by both BBC Radio 2 and RTÉ Radio 1. Raised in a rich musical household and nurtured through the Armagh Pipers’ Club, she carries forward a deep familial and cultural legacy of song. Cape Bretoners Dane Pedersen, Maxim Cormier, and Malcolm MacNeil will also be on hand to share their music. All three are past winners of the Festival Volunteer Drive’ers Association’s “Big Sampy” Award. It will be a treat to hear how they come together as a trio.
