We are excited to welcome home Cape Breton’s fiddling ambassador Natalie MacMaster to help open the 22nd Celtic Colours International Festival. Fitting with this year’s theme of “Connected”, Natalie maintains her strong ties to our fair isle. Her roots are in Troy, Judique, and Mabou just up the road from tonight’s concert. She shares this connection with the world every time she takes to the stage, and makes sure her seven children feel the Cape Breton connection as well, teaching the music and dance, and making many trips home. We’ll meet our Artists in Residence—Cape Breton musician, producer, and researcher Paul MacDonald and renowned Scottish piper and scholar Allan MacDonald—and reconnect with Blazin’ Fiddles, who have been been showcasing the connections among different Scottish fiddle traditions for twenty years. Scottish Gaelic singers Mairi MacInnes and Rona Lightfoot will also join in this opening celebration of connecting with old friends and familiar faces.
