Unama’ki is the Mi’kmaw name for Cape Breton Island and today’s mawio’mi, or gathering, takes place in Eskasoni, where the traditions of music, song, dance and storytelling are celebrated. This mawio’mi welcomes piper David Power and harpist Triona Marshall from Ireland, Métis fiddler Alex Kusturok, and sought-after Cape Breton piano-player and dancer Hilda Chiasson. Award-winning Eskasoni singer Richard Poulette emceed this concert last year and he returns to the stage this year with local band The Relatives, whose popularity has remained strong throughout the Maritimes, for more than 25 years. The Denny Family Dancers are also back this year to share their vital traditional culture through song and dance.
