D’Escousse is one of the main settlements on Isle Madame, off the southwest coast of Richmond County. Settled by Basque fishermen, who married into local Acadian families, Isle Madame would become 90% Acadian by the early 1800s, before Scottish and Irish immigration would see the Acadian population on the Isle drop closer to half. While history tells us that the Acadians were there first, tonight’s concert puts the music first with the Celtic influence being at the root. Celebrated Cape Breton fiddler Andrea Beaton has been living in Montreal for the last number of years and with Quebecois fiddler Véronique Plasse, she makes the connection between the roots and branches. Scottish band Rura will be wrapping up their first visit to Celtic Colours with this concert as The Savoy Family Cajun Band’s trip is just beginning. Cape Breton, Scottish, Quebecois and Cajun influences come together in this study of how we’re all connected through music.
