Inspired by Irish musician Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich’s 2017 journey from Ireland to Spain in a traditional Irish rowboat, Voices of the Naomhóg will see this group of artists teaming up to make and row their own naomhóg from Baddeck to Iona. While the boats are being made, with the assistance of Mi’kmaq craftsmen, the artists will share music, Gaelic song, and dance to be presented at concerts in Baddeck and Iona. Fiddler Rosie MacKenzie, who has spent the last number of years working on sailboats abroad, has been a frequent musical collaborator with Breanndán. The journey begins in Baddeck, where Alexander Graham Bell, Mabel Bell and F.W. Casey Baldwin developed and tested Bell’s HD4 hydrofoil, and it broke the speed record almost 100 years ago. The concert will be in the Bell Museum where a replica of the innovative watercraft is on display, alongside the naomhóg itself.
