Music has always been an important part of life in New Waterford, a former coal-mining town on the Atlantic coast. Many of the town’s original settlers came from the Irish seaport of Waterford, and found work in the area’s coalmines. With strong ties to their Scottish and Irish roots intact, folks in this community love music and never miss an opportunity to gather for tunes, whether it means spending all night at a house party or the afternoon in a church. This afternoon’s concert sees County Waterford native, uilleann piper David Power joining forces with Triona Marshall who has been playing harp with The Chieftains for almost 20 years. From New Waterford comes venerated Cape Breton piano player Doug MacPhee, whose musical connections run back several generations through his mother Margaret, who accompanied all of the great players of the Island’s Scottish fiddle tradition. Fiddlers Dan and Shawn MacDonald, from Ironville, round out the afternoon of tunes while well-known Big Pond singer Blanche Sophocleous lends her voice in song.
