Gangspil revels in the tradition of Danish folk music, from wild polkas and jigs to lyrical waltzes, fiery reels and happy hopsas. With a repertoire that includes dance tunes from the famous Island of Fanø and long-forgotten songs, this duo is undeniably attached to the traditional music of their homeland, giving them much in common with the other performers on stage tonight. For more than twenty years, Gaelic singer Mary Jane Lamond and fiddle/ piano-player and step-dancer Wendy MacIsaac have explored the sounds of Gaelic song and dance music in Cape Breton. Old songs find new life in Mary Jane’s voice while Wendy, and multi-instrumental bandmates Cathy Porter and Matt MacIsaac, provide just the right accompaniment and arrangements to bring it into the now, without ever losing sight of the tradition behind the music. And there are few players on the Island today more influenced by this music and tradition than fiddler Shelly Campbell and piano-player Allan Dewar.
