An influential figure on Cape Breton’s piping culture, Sandy Boyd arrived here in the 1940s from Scotland where he was born into a piping family. A successful competition piper, he played a different style than the old- time pipers of Cape Breton, but his musicianship won their admiration. He would travel around, playing everywhere he could, staying with families in exchange for pipe lessons, and in the process inspired generations of pipers around Inverness County. Known to play all night at house parties, tapes of his playing are still listened to today. Sandy taught and was a judge at the Gaelic College in the 1950s, so it’s nice to be able to give a nod to him with the fine collection of players here this afternoon.
