Pjila’si means welcome in Mi’kmaq and tonight everyone is welcome to celebrate music, culture, heritage and dance in the community of Wagmatcook. This evening’s concert will start with a traditional welcome ceremony by the Indian Bay Drummers. This welcome will be extended to all visitors, of course, but especially to the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers, a brothers-sister trio of dancers from Manitoba who will be performing on Cape Breton Island for the first time in this concert. They share their passion for dance, and their Métis culture, through the “Red River Jig”, a dance that was established in the late 1700s and passed down through generations, carrying on the Métis tradition. Derrick and Melody Cameron and Brian Doyle can certainly relate to this passing down of tradition as all three Cape Breton musicians have been involved in mentorship programs of one kind or another for many years now. Scottish group Kinnaris Quintet rounds out the lineup and shares in the welcome as they also make their Celtic Colours debut tonight.
