Once a major industry in Sydney Mines, coal mining has a 250-year history in this community, where the Princess Colliery was in continuous operation for 100 years until its closure in 1975. We’re in for a mighty ceilidh when these players get together in the former coal town tonight. The fingers will be flying with guitar virtuosos J.P. Cormier, Beppe Gambetta and Jake Lauzon bringing a world of Celtic, bluegrass, and Appalachian styles to the stage at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Fiddlers Brent and Leanne Aucoin come from Sydney Mines, but their family roots are in the Chéticamp area, where Brent was heavily influenced by the legendary playing of Arthur Muise. Piano player Joël Chiasson completes the Chéticamp connection for some energetic dance tunes. With an arsenal of fiddle, bagpipes, guitar, dance and Gaelic song, award-winning Scottish group Breabach rounds out this musical visit of players from Cape Breton, Ontario, Italy and Scotland.
