Ballads, lullabies, protest songs, pop songs and anthems—they all have their place in the choir, to paraphrase a popular children’s song. Songs give voice to love, loss, struggle, and happiness. They reflect the times we live in, telling stories of the land and the people who inhabit it. Songs can unite people and divide them, make them laugh and cry, bring memories to life and open the floodgates of emotion. Songs are written and learned, passed down and passed around, shared and coveted, but most importantly, songs are sung. Tonight we have three powerful and distinctive voices in Canadian-born Granadian singer-songwriter Kaia Kater, Lucy MacNeil of Cape Breton’s award- winning Barra MacNeils, and cherished Canadian singer-songwriter Laura Smith coming together to raise their voices in song. The United Protestant Church in Sydney River is a beautiful setting for these three celebrated women of song.
