You can almost see it from the venue in Port Hawkesbury. The Canso Causeway, with its “mainland rock and mainland clay, it was built for going away”, according to the song by Albert MacDonald and John Gillis from 1981’s musical revue, The Rise and Follies of Cape Breton Island. But not tonight. Tonight is about crossing the Causeway to gather together, among friends and family for songs and tunes. And maybe even a little dancing. Once you get across the Causeway, as the performers in this concert have had to do, symbolically at least, it’s all about family. Troy MacGillivray and sisters Sabra and Kendra are cousins with Cassie & Maggie, who happen to be sisters, of course. And the MacKenzie Family, featuring Isle of Skye-based piper Angus MacKenzie and his family: son Calum (button box, bagpipes), daughters Màili and MairidhAnne (fiddle, accordion, mandolin) and wife Eilidh (clàrsach, piano), who last performed at Celtic Colours with Scottish band Dòchas. David Francey may seem like the odd one out in this family affair, but the celebrated singer-songwriter’s deep connection to Celtic Colours puts him firmly in the family category.
