Located on the south coast of Cape Breton Island, the St. Peter’s Canal joins the Atlantic Ocean to the sparkling Bras d’Or Lake. Construction on the Canal began in 1854 and took 15 years to complete. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1929. Celtic Colours has presented a concert in St. Peter’s during the Festival going back as early as 2002, but the concert wasn’t named for the Canal until the following year. The Céilidh on the Canal has typically been an energetic one and this year is no exception. Cape Breton fiddler, dancer, and culture bearer Wendy MacIsaac will be performing with long-time musical pal Brad Davidge, Manx / Scottish group Mec Lir will bring audiences to their feet with their infectious brand of “trad pop”, and, making his first Celtic Colours appearance is established songwriter Robert Thomas. Robert’s songs can be found in the repertoires of everyone from Kenny Rogers and Joe Cocker to Bonnie Raitt and the Dixie Chicks. Backed by an all-star band, that includes Celtic Colours veteran Ray Legere, Robert will share some of those songs during tonight’s céilidh.
