What is it about music that you can remember how a song goes, even after years of not hearing it? Most likely it’s the melody. A melody is a combination of notes arranged together as one. It’s the catchy part of a song that gets stuck in your head—the part you would whistle or hum, rather than the part you would tap your foot to. Medleys, on the other hand, are typically parts of songs put together and presented as one, like a medley of a beloved band’s hits. In Cape Breton’s traditional music, medleys of tunes are strung together into sets for dancing. Tonight’s artists are well-versed in both and you’re sure to be humming something on your way out the door at the end of the show. So sit back, settle in, and enjoy the show!
