There are no boundaries in tonight’s closing concert with this collection of musicians taking the stage. Cape Breton’s fiddling ambassador Natalie MacMaster’s fourth album was called “No Boundaries ” and she showed with that album, released in 1997, that her musical boundaries were expanding beyond the traditional music of her Island home. She went on to collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, and ultimately with her husband Donnell Leahy as we’ll see tonight in their only appearance during the Festival this year. Natalie’s also worked with Béla Fleck on her 2003 album Blueprint and they shared the stage at Celtic Colours in 2006. Béla certainly knows no boundaries when it comes to musical genres. As a multiple Grammy Award-winning banjo player, he’s taken home the gold-plated statuette in the country, jazz, pop, world music, classical crossover, and folk categories. He’ll be onstage with his wife, Abigail Washburn, a singer-songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who re-radicalized it by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. Natalie calls Tim Edey her “favourite guitarist in the whole world”. A bona fide virtuoso, Tim switches effortlessly between guitar and melodeon, sometimes in the same tune. Tim is paired up with Irish singer Iarla Ó Lionáird who has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Peter Gabriel, Nick Cave, Robert Plant and Sinead O'Connor.
