Pjila'si means welcome in Mi'kmaq, and Wagmatcook, like all First Nations communities of Cape Breton, has always been a very welcoming one. The Culture and Heritage Centre is a beautifully sounding room overlooking Nyanza Bay. This evening's concert will open with a traditional welcome ceremony performed by the Indian Bay Drummers, a local Mi'kmaw drum group who have been celebrating their culture through drumming and song for over 30 years. This welcome extends to locals and visitors alike, including our neighbours from Newfoundland and Labrador in the award-winning group The Once who are playing the Festival for the first time in eight years. With their soothing vocal harmonies and acoustically-rich sound, the modern indie folk trio mingles their musical roots from Newfoundland with folk, bluegrass, country, Americana, and modern indie rock. Cape Breton fiddler, piano player, and step dancer Kimberley Fraser will be joined by Mac Morin on piano and Aaron Lewis on guitar to complete the evening with a selection of tunes.
