Great music has always been a staple in New Waterford, a town on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton with a proud history of coal mining. The collapse of the mining industry in Inverness County during the 1950s prompted many descendants of that area’s Scottish settlers to make their way to New Waterford looking for work. With strong ties to their Scottish roots intact, folks in this community love music and never miss an opportunity to gather for some tunes. So it's only fitting that we should have a little céilidh this afternoon in New Waterford with some of Inverness County’s favourite traditional musicians, Kinnon and Betty Lou Beaton, and Rodney MacDonald and James MacLean. Elise Boeur and Adam Iredale-Gray will keep the tunes flowing as they dig into some of their favourites on hardingfele, guitar, and twin fiddles. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Roger Stone will catch up with Harold Davidson, his old band mate from popular Cape Breton folk band Brakin’ Tradition, to round out this afternoon céilidh.
