There’s no question why folks will want to come out to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck tonight. This unique venue honours the legacy of its namesake, inventor Alexander Graham Bell, who just happened to be a great lover of music, and a fine piano player as well. After travelling the world, he chose to live on Cape Breton Island for its unrivaled beauty. Surely it wasn’t just the scenery he was referring to—the music might have had something to do with it, too. Tonight’s concert recognizes Bell’s love for music with a collection of performers from island’s renowned for their musical cultures. Con O’Brien has been sharing the music of his ancestral Irish home and beloved Newfoundland and Labrador for more than 35 years, touring all over North America as lead singer of the award-winning Irish Descendants. Rooted in the traditional music of Shetland, pianist Amy Laurenson will be joined by guitarist Miguel Girão for some tunes that show the love of music knows no boundaries. Fiddler Shelly Campbell and piano player Allan Dewar grew up absorbing the traditional musical culture of Cape Breton and are a popular pair at dances, concerts, and céilidhs.
