The St. Peter’s Parish Church in Ingonish has been witness to many memorable moments in its more than 100-year history. And memories will be made again tonight in this beautiful old church as the surrounding hills of the Cape Breton Highlands come to life with the sounds of fiddle, accordion, banjo, mandolin, guitar, piano, and song. Situated north of Cape Smokey on the incomparable Cabot Trail, the drive alone is worth the trip. But wait until you hear the music. Dirk Powell is a “musician’s musician” who has toured with Joan Baez, Eric Clapton, Loretta Lynn, and Rhiannon Giddens who he performed with at Celtic Colours in 2017. Dirk is here this time with his daughter Amelia, a hard-driving guitar player and soulful singer who grew up exploring the old-time music of her Appalachian heritage. Multi-instrumentalists Décota McNamara and Jeremy Finney have been impressing Celtic Colours audiences for a few years now with their mix of tunes and songs. Pianist Amy Laurenson and Glasgow Scotland-based guitarist Miguel Girão reflect on Amy’s traditional Shetland roots and how this has grown to be intertwined with threads of contemporary influence and ideas. The rolling hills of the Cape Breton Highlands make for some of the most stunning views in the world and combined with the musicianship on display tonight, this one has the makings of the trip of a life time .
