Among the many traditions established in Cape Breton over the years, coming home for holidays is one of the most cherished. With so many of the Island’s young people coming home for the Thanksgiving weekend from University and off-island jobs, we decided to have a party to celebrate. And what a gang this is to celebrate with! Mary Jane Lamond has dedicated her 30-year musical career to the preservation of Scottish Gaelic songs. The two-time Artist in Residence has been a mainstay on Celtic Colours stages since 1997, performing on her own and with long-time musical collaborator Wendy MacIsaac who was also part of Mary Jane’s band alongside Cathy Porter, Chris Corrigan, Ed Woodsworth, and Geoff Arsenault. They spent 11 busy years on the road starting in the mid-90s, and now the band is getting back together for this one-time, special reunion performance. Sharing their 30th anniversary with Mary Jane on this night, Flook is back with their inimitable trademark sound of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen’s flutes and whistles weaving through tunes over the precise grooves laid down by the guitar and bodhran of Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly. The high-energy evening will come to a crescendo with Rankin MacInnis and the Broken Reeds closing out the night. Genre-defying sets and a reputation for delivering unforgettable shows precedes this crew voted Music Nova Scotia’s Entertainers of the Year in 2023. This is one concert you are not going to want to miss!
