It’s the end of a long weekend and back to work tomorrow. But it’s also Celtic Colours season, so if you’re feeling like stretching the weekend out for one more night, Celtic Pub at the North Sydney Firefighters Club is the place to be. Saltfishforty has delighted audiences at many of the world’s top folk festivals including Celtic Connections, Cambridge, HebCelt, Shetland, and Lorient Interceltic Festival in Brittany, as well as touring in the US and throughout Europe. Their focus on Orkney music takes in traditional, contemporary, and original material, boldly cross-fertilized with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a high-octane whiff of heavy metal. Joining us from Québec, Hommage aux Aînés brings a repertoire—largely from the self-proclaimed world capital of traditional Québecois song—is a rich mix of merrymaking themes full of double entendre. With an infectious good humour that transcends language, this five-member powerhouse keeps the mood light and playful while honouring the ancient call-and-answer singing of their ancestors. Allie Bennett and Fred Lavery round out the evening with a set of timeless East Coast songs and tunes. These versatile musical veterans have been crossing paths for decades, dating back to the mid-1970s in the groundbreaking Cape Breton band Road. This is a classic Celtic Colours night, full of variety and tradition, the music bringing people together from different traditions to share in a night of merrymaking.
