L’Ardoise, or “Lordways” as they say locally, was named by early French settlers for the large deposits of rock and slate they found along the shore. Considering "a full slate" as something of a full schedule, it could certainly be said that that is exactly what we have lined up here. Since releasing their debut duo album last year, Rachel Davis and Darren McMullen have been more focussed on songs than they had been in the past playing with Còig. They take turns on lead vocals and harmonies, shifting effortlessly from haunting ancient melodies to contemporary folk classics to brand new songs written with some of this generation’s most acclaimed songwriters. Rachel also sings in Gaelic, and don’t worry, they’ll have plenty of tunes on the go to get your toes tapping, too. Joining Rachel and Darren in today’s concert are two family duos with roots in the area. Brothers Dwayne Côté and Roger Stone grew up in Grand Greve, a community less than 10 minutes from the venue. Known for his fiddle playing and composing, Dwayne’s deeply rooted Cape Breton style blends effortlessly with jazz and classical influences while Roger, a longtime member of beloved Maritimes band McGinty, does the guitar and banjo picking and singing. Myles Davidson is a gifted singer-songwriter from St. Peter’s, about 15 minutes away, who will be accompanied by his father, Harold, for a set that celebrates the familial joy of making music together.
