The Acadian and Québecois musical traditions of Eastern Canada take centre stage in this concert at La Picasse Centre Communautaire Culturel in Petit-de-Grat. The main Acadian village on Isle Madame, Richmond County, Petit-de-Grat is a small fishing community that traces its French roots back to the early 1700s. It’s where you will find the heaviest population of French-speaking people on Isle Madame, with many Acadian families still living on their original homesteads. All of the performers will feel at home here tonight with French connections running throughout the concert. Vishtèn is an award-winning Acadian band from Prince Edward Island and the Magdalen Islands, celebrated for their dedication to preserving and promoting the traditional music of their Acadian heritage while also creating new Acadian music. Fiddler Donna Marie DeWolfe, from nearby River Tillard, comes from a line of musicians on both sides of her family and grew up surrounded by Cape Breton fiddle music. She’ll be accompanied by Joël Chiasson of Chéticamp, another Acadian region of Cape Breton Island. Renowned for his subtle, driving piano style, Joël brings decades of experience to the stage. And making their Celtic Colours debut in tonight’s concert, Hommage aux Aînés, is here from Lanaudière, Québec, one of the most francophone parts of Canada. This group of culture bearers are legendary back home for their enthusiastic performances rooted in the ancient Québecois tradition of call-and-answer singing.
