Mi’kmaq poet Rita Joe challenged indigenous youth to find their voices, share their stories, and celebrate their talents. “Gentle Warrior” is a song written by students and staff at the Allison Bernard Memorial High School in response to Joe's poem “I Lost My Talk”. Since time began, language has been a defining feature in the identity of a people. Saving their indigenous languages is a mission shared by First Nations across Canada, and Gaels in Scotland and Cape Breton. In each case many factors contributed to the erosion and extinction of their language, threatening the very identities of the Gaels and the Mi’kmaq. As these means of expression disappear, thousands of years of knowledge, beliefs, values, and culture hang in the balance. Today in this First Nations community we meet some of the gentle warriors from Scotland and Cape Breton who are fighting to be heard in their own languages, expressed through one of humanity’s truly universal languages, music.
