Pjila’si means welcome in Mi’kmaw and tonight we celebrate our fortune to have such welcoming First Nations communities on the Island. From the time the Scottish settlers first arrived here, they were shown true kindness by the Mi’kmaq people. Singer Evan Googoo will extend a welcome to visitors from near and far, including IVA, a throat-singer, poet and writer from Nunavut whose melodic mix of throat singing and poetry bridges sounds from both her Inuit and Irish- Cape Breton roots. George Paul, from the Metepenagiag First Nation in New Brunswick, may be best known for creating the “Mi’kmaq Honour Song”, but he’s been involved in reviving Mi’kmaq songs, chants and ceremonies for more than 30 years. And we’ll get our first taste of Scottish trio Talisk’s energetic and dynamic sound.
Hosted by Wagmatcook Culture & Heritage Centre
NEARBY MEALS: Potluck Supper and Soul Food Supper
