Boisdale is one of those communities where traditional music, language and dancing have remained central to the way of life since the land was settled by Scottish immigrants in the early 1800s. Most of these settlers were from Barra and some say you can still hear a touch of the Barra accent in the local Gaelic. Community gatherings tend to happen at the Fire Hall these days, where dances and concerts are held year-round. Renowned Gaelic singer Cathy Ann MacPhee was born and raised on Barra, so she should feel right at home here tonight, accompanied by Patsy Seddon on harp. Piano player Maybelle Chisholm McQueen is a local legend, who, with fiddler Colin Grant and guitar-player Brian Doyle, will offer up some good old Cape Breton tunes, and PEI’s Ten Strings and a Goat Skin make their Festival debut as we celebrate 15 years of Raising the Roof in Boisdale.
